Tsavo West Animals

On a recent trip to Tsavo West in Kenya I was lucky enough to encounter and photograph some fantastic animals. We did a three day safari which, looking back, was not long enough … I’d go back there tomorrow if I could. Tsavo is a huge national park, together with Tsavo East they cover an area as large as Jamaica. It it humbling to find yourself in such an imposing environment with views over the vast areas of savannah and scrub stretching off into the haze of purple and ochre mountains. The country is rough and the drive was bumpy but our driver; Jonathan had sharp eyes and was always able to spot any game long before we did. What follows is a short selection of my photos from the trip. I hope that they encourage you to visit Africa or Tsavo … it’s a truly magical place and our trip was unforgettable.

This male lion had damaged eye and a few scars ... he was alone having failed to win the pride and looked the worse for a few scraps.

Zebra are everywhere and you soon become used to them. Funny really because if you think about it, they're pretty mad looking animals!

Water Buffalo drinking. These are big animals, big enough to take on a lion or two if they're in the mood. Best not to get too close

Eelephants ... what can you say about them? They're just amazing, especially when they all come down to drink and make a real fuss

This Giraffe was blocking the road. Gives you some idea who's boss in this park ... it ain't the humans.

This Maribu Stork sat on a dead tree on one leg all night. Right by our Banda. I liked him, he looked like a wisened old butler

On the third day we drove through a large herd of Impala and I caught these two chaps having a tete a tete!

I hope you enjoyed the pics and they may have enthused you to go on safari in Kenya. It can be expensive but for a treat every now and again this type of holiday is so worth it and so memorable. Sadly I didn't manage to get pictures of Leopard, Rhino or Hippo, but that has only wetted my appetite to return to Africa. Take a walk on the wild side.

Hi Tom, great photos you obviously had a ball over there the naked eye tell us so much more. Haven't made it to Africa yet but your trip is truly inspiring. I would love those lizards too had two strolling, um slithering, about the job a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed watching their progress as the day wore on. Cheers mate

Cheers Guys, glad you enjoyed them. Going on safari was like Jurassic park ... you don't know what you're going to see or when ... and then these huge animals just loom out of the bush ... it gets your heart racing.

Hi Tom, nice to see you enjoyed your safari in Kenya. Beautiful country.!! Looking at the pictures and reading your hub makes me awfully homesick (but in a nice way) . Thank you for visiting our beautiful country and for writing about it, the world needs to see more positive stuff about Africa.

Cheers, Caroline

Thanks Carogathoni, I loved Kenya. The people were friendly, the culture was so different to my own and for me, the safari was just fantastic. I really hope to go again. You have a lovely country.
